But that's where it is right now.

Cold feet about doing an upcoming DiSC series.

And that's because the "C" rises up, wanting to do things just right, but not feeling prepared enough.

Patience & Perseverance

It was not often that you would get such an opportunity. The weather was perfect and the scenery was just there to be snapped. Your camera is at hand. The situation is ideal.

There is only problem one problem. You are not alone. You are in a company of people who might not appreciate your passion for photography, let alone photography of scenery.

What would you do?

The high C stood his ground and snapped away, ignoring the others in the party, knowing full well that there was no other agenda, no other appointments.... and got these beautiful shots.
Timing was important especially when the opportunity presented itself so beautifully.
Not to take it would have been a waste of documenting a wonderful work of art in the sky.
Worth the stares of the others. Worth almost incurring their wrath. Glad that they were mostly high S - they didn't mind too much!

Carrying On Regardless

Many ways to describe the one type who is not concerned if the world goes by. The "cool". Pass him to the high "D" who will get frustrated as he tries to train. The high "I" will try to cheer to change, but give up fairly quickly. The "S" will probably not change - most likely join in! The High "C"? He's probably the one under the hat!

Audit

This is taken from a site I know. Can you imagine the responses ?

The High D would study, critique and work out how to increase traffic to the site. And act on it.

The High I would squeal with joy, delighted with the results. And carry on as is.

The High C would evaluate and probably work out an average per month, per week and per day hit. Perhaps even get another widget which would do the analysis for him/her.

The High S? No squeals or loud expressions of any sort. Just a glad smile and a steady-as-she-goes attitude....

The high D presses on anyway.
The high C goes away to analyze and figure out what went wrong.
The high S might cry quietly.
The high I will rant and tell someone, anyone and maybe do something he/she with hindsight will regret - apart from all the ranting.

Labeling

It doesn't make it right - labeling people I mean. Just because you are good at this, it doesn't give you the right to label people and explain their actions/inactions without first finding out more, and without first finding out their perspective.

Take note people, don't judge too hastily.

Actually it's the first rule of DiSC - don't label.

Which seems contradictory considering what I spend a lot of time doing on this site.

But you see, this site is dedicated to DiSC.

And the understanding of personalities.

And I don't post every day.

Nor do I label the people I meet.

Hope the distinction is clear.

Manipulation

He said she'd done it before, and his profile was such-and-such.

I was not convinced, having interacted with him for a short while. I expected him to be different.

But he had already a test less than 6 months earlier. Was I right to do another so soon?

In the end, I chose to.

Because I knew I needed it done "as is" rather than to be "manipulated".

Sure enough, when the response came in, it was different from the first test.

What's more, my results showed he was eminently suitable for the job at hand.

So I was glad that I did it again!

The Blame Game

What is it that makes someone want to pass the buck? To put the blame on someone else? To not take responsibility?

Why do some people want to make others feel bad to make themselves feel good?

What is it that causes someone to want to find fault?

Inevitably, often and sadly, it is because the person himself/herself is insecure.

But when derives significance from the discomfort, misfortune or demise of others, that just doesn't sit right....

Don't let another's problems become yours.

It Takes All Sorts

She had been invited for a meal. As far as I knew, they were not going dutch - her friend was going to pay.

Whilst her friend enjoyed her meal, she insisted that her meat was underdone and sent the plate back. Then she commented on the cold vegetables.

Finally she reiterated her disappointment to both the owner and the owner's spouse.

Much to the embarrassment of her friend who had thought it would be a treat.

The High D/C insisted on making her presence felt and opinion known. Regardless of the feelings of her High C/S friend who intensely disliked drawing attention to their table.

Defusing a potential situation required tremendous tact and self control. Which the owner DID exhibit. A classic case to answering wrath softly. Totally disarmed her. Absolutely silenced her.

I had much to learn.

Pushy

The computer did not seem to want to respond in the expected manner. Most frustrating for some. For others, like this person, it was a challenge to find the right solution. Time did not matter. In fact, this was a task that could not be rushed. There was a process of elimination to go through.
"Try again" the sign said. And so he did.

Would he succeed?

He has to.

He is a high "C"

Too often we think that if we can impress others, we will gain influence with them. We want to become others’ heroes – to be larger than life. That creates a problem because we’re real live human beings. People can see us for who we really are. If we make it our goal to impress them, we puff up our pride and end up being pretentious – and that turns people off.

If you want to influence others, don’t try to impress them. Pride is really nothing more than a form of selfishness, and pretense is only a way to keep people at arm’s length so that they can’t see who you really are. Instead of impressing others, let them impress you.

It’s really a matter of attitude. The people with charisma, those who attract others to themselves, are individuals who focus on others, not themselves. They ask questions of others. They listen. They don’t try to be the center of attention. And they never try to pretend they’re perfect.

Choices

The younger one was whining.

The older one was provoking.

The mother was busy with her reading.

The father felt powerless.

The older one insisted that it was his right to play the PS2. He added that he didnt think the battery would last for the younger one to play. Naturally the younger one got upset. He pleaded with his parents to let him play first, or to tell his brother to stop.

Would you discipline the provocative child? Or would you attend to the whining one?

What would you do?

The mother continued with her reading.

Dad, however, was a high C. He opted to spend time with the whining child to explain why the older sibling was not to be heeded. He was anxious to explain why his decision to allow the older one to use the PS2 was right, and that he was not wrong about the battery life. He set aside the older one to sit next to his younger offspring to try to calm him down.

The older one continued to play. And smirked.

The younger one continued to whine. And was not appeased.

Yes, they were next to me on the plane....

Coping With Consequences

There are consequences to everything we say or don't say, do or don't do.

Some consequences are good - nice results.

Some consequences are neutral.

Some consequences are not so nice at all.

Whatever they may be, facing them in the right way is vital. Don't get over-reactive or too chatty as a high "I" is wont to do. Don't be too calculating and think too much as a high "C" might. Don't be too emotional or intimidated by them as a high "S" could. Don't be too bull-headed as the high "D" often is.

Forethought is important - plan to respond and not react.

Then live it out.

I have the best ever team to work with. They pull together well for events we organize. Not only that, they show initiative as they do so. So we are not perfect and we drop the ball sometimes. But they quickly recover and get things going again...

The Necessary Ingredient

No, I am not talking about baking or cooking on this site! (Might do so on another site - clue see the list of other sites found here)

Rather, I was reflecting on an incident which happened recently.

Take two people with different views on how a simple project can be done.

Make that two strong people with different views.

To be more accurate, it was involving two strong and vocal people.

That, dear reader, is a recipe for disaster.

A very visible, loud and explosive one.

How then, to repair the damage?

What can bring about a restoration?

Is there a chance for reconciliation?

Yes, the answer is Yes.

The necessary ingredient then, to salvage and amend things is to apologise. Someone once said you dont have to be wrong to apologise. I agree.

And so it happened. An apology was extended. It was sort of accepted. And then things carried on.

What sort of person would apologise even though not in the wrong?

Someone who seeks peace. Someone who is secure. Someone who is confident. That would be a D determined to do what is right, being able to set aside personal agenda and feelings for the sake of the wellbeing of the situation.

A C would do it too, after some thought. He/she would calculate and then decide that this, being the right course of action, is the apt thing to do. Of course, after thinking, the opposite could be the conclusion. That being the case, then the C will not be the one to do this.

An S would certainly do it, but with fear and trepidation. S dislike confrontations intensely and would probably not have got into this situation in the first case!

An I could have sparked it, and prolonged it. But an I would equally be quick to get over it. Apologies could be spontaneous, but they can come across somewhat false....

Staying Together

So there is a crisis. It's an emergency. Something has to be done quickly.

WHO will respond the fastest?

Quick actions belong to the high D and high I. On the other hand, the specialists in the high S and high C will also do very well.

So the bottom line is.... a crisis is a crisis which needs prompt action. It doesnt matter who responds.

Just do it!

Confrontation

What happens when one is confronted?

Does one feel indignant and fight back?

Or does one feel fear and want to please, perhaps even babbling away in reaction?

Or does one feel totally crushed and unable to respond?

What about the sense of wanting to justify and prove - "Just wait till I get my facts together"

It's not always easy to face confrontation.
It's not always easy not to take it personally.
It's not always easy not to react.

But the best response is not always the best reaction.
The best response is to know yourself and the person who is doing the confrontation.
Then decide on a plan of action.
Better still, decide on the plan of action beforehand and follow through with a level head even if the heart doesnt follow.

Then confrontation can become constructive.

Facing the Bug

There is a bug going around. People all around me are falling ill one by one. It's interesting how different people respond / react to not being in the pink of health.

Someone I know, let's call him A, just mopes about looking for sympathy. Is it a male thing or is it because he is an "I" and would like to express his disturbed state of emotions and seek gratification?

Then, there's B who stoic-like goes to work day after day, despite coughing as if his lungs will fall out. Do his workmates appreciate his spreading the germs or the work he consistently turns in because he is a "C".

"S" of course, will go to bed and rest properly, as the Doctor ordered.

The "D" would face such challenges and obstacles head on - he'd go swimming or work out somewhere, stuffed with some medication bought over the counter - if he goes to the pharmacist at all.

So, which are you, when you fall ill?

For some time now, I have not only been training about DiSC and how knowing your temperament helps to work with others as well as to draw the best out from others. I have been working in new surroundings where I am able to put into practice what I teach.

And yes, it works. It really does.

It helps me to interact with different people in different ways. Because I understand what makes them tick, what turns them off and what makes them motivated, I am able to get along well with most people.

Most of all I believe I can help to make a contribution to the effectiveness of a team, thereby getting more from the team.

It is not easy to change. Thus, having high expectation on changing the spouse character will cause disappointment and unpleasantness.

It would be less painful to change ourselves and lower our expectations."

Blinded or Blended

It's one thing to know your profile.

It's another if you use the profile to justify your behaviour and actions.

Knowing your own profile should enable you to understand yourself better; both your strengths and your weaknesses. Thereby avoiding pitfalls. Then you have a good blend as you work on your weak areas, and do not over do your strong ones. Especially in relation to others.

But if you only use it to label other people, you will fail. And worse, you will be sorely disappointed.

Because people do that, you know - they disappoint.

"SO ME"

She almost looked bewildered. Having attended the first and second of three workshops, she was wondering how it was possible that I would be able to describe her so accurately. "What you said was SO ME!" Then the tears fell.

Since she was one of forty young people whom I was meeting for the first time, I initially had problems remembering what it was that I had said.

Then as more recollection came, I realised that she was also disturbed for other reasons. Together with another, she received confirmation, affirmation, and I believe, comfort.

The next day, she told the other person that she was much better and that she was able to do the things she needed to.

When that happens, it makes what I do truly worthwhile...

Took a bunch of about 40 young people through the first part of three on DiSC.

Aptly named "Why Me? Why You? Why Us?" the plan is to explore aspects of DiSC and see how we can learn more about better communication, leadership and to facilitate being more effective.

Yes, we had fun, despite the short time. It was especially fun for me when specific examples given are spot on and I see their reactions. No substitute for that.

Better still was that at the end of the evening, I had a queue lining to hear and learn more.

I enjoy working with this age group!

Practising

But even with giftedness, one has to practice.

And that requires a diligence and persistence. A "C" trait most essential. This is what make High "C"s specialists and experts in their field.

Three Times Too Many

This is a post to laugh at myself.

I decided to be more adventurous with my choice of lipstick. I felt that it was time that the colours and type I use ought to vary a little.

There was a sale. So I shopped for lipstick. Tested the different ones on the back of my hand, I chose one. Went home to try it on properly and preen in the mirror.
That's when I found I had the same one already on the dressing table.

That was episode number one.

Episode number two was when I was waiting . Just killing time you know. Again, a sale was being held. Deciding that I would definitely go for something different, I marched boldly to the lipstick sections. This time I took twice as long to test and confirm the one I wanted.

When I got home, I decided to check the ones I have in comparison. After all, I was going to be more daring!

To my utter disguest with myself, I found an EXACT one already taking its place. Hardly used. Humph!

You can't imagine it getting worse, right? Sigh... If only I was making this up....

Episode three was just two days ago. This time, the shop was different. The sale was big. The time was at night. Again, I was waiting for someone. I took three times as long. I tested every single lipstick on the shelf. Read it again - EVERY SINGLE ONE. Even those that I KNEW would be simply yucky. The back of my hand was a sticky mess by the time I was done.

And yet.

My selection was... dare I post this....

My selection was IDENTICAL to the one I had in my purse and was already using!!!!

Bury head in hands and groan.....

It is sooooo hard for him to merely stand back and watch. Even as he observes the situation, I am observing him, and can see him itching to say something. I can see him struggling to hold his tongue, yeah, bite it even.

Being a classic "I" with an opinion of many matters because he is tinged with "D" as well, it requires tremendous self control not to take over. He knows he is more capable. He is full aware that there is much that can be improved.

But he is not there to be hands on. No. He needs to allow the other to learn, to grow, to improve. And even make mistakes.

So he smiles.

And walks away when it gets close to intolerable.

Admirable indeed.

Being Affirmed

The language used was classic "C" - the person was being affirmed for what had been done, for quality of work, for accomplishments.

The listener was a classic "I" - hungry for affirmation on the person rather than the job or project.

It made rather interesting eavesdropping. How would the classic "I" take it?

Ahhh, the classic "I" accepted it totally but then re-ran the conversation an hour later, seeking more affirmation.

Being Chinese!

As in most major cities in the world, there are places where the Chinese flock to. Called Chinatown usually, the metropolitan cities host places where good food reminiscent of "home" can be found.

London is no exception.

Chinatown there was frequented by us when we wanted rice by the sack and certain Chinese provision, often in tins.

On our recent visit to London we paid a visit there.

In particular we looked for one shop. Famous for its cheap, good food, it was equally renown for its rude waiters who would shoo you out and/or slam the bill as you gulped down the last bit of Chinese tea.
To our amazement, the cost of a meal there had not increased in the twenty years we had left.
It made us wonder about this Chinese entrepreneur. They go for volume. There are even seats for people who are alone and want a quick meal.
This is being Chinese, no particular personality. This is the culture!

Having only met him the second time now, I had nonetheless spent quality time with him. It was easy to describe his characteristics.

Needless to say, he was amazed that I knew him so well.

Next stop - confirming his strengths and weaknesses.

Fighting Back by Standing Firm

I observed her from the back. I could see her shoulders square. Her back straightened. A check on her side showed a jawline taut. She was going to fight back.

Two days after leaving on a jetplane to a far away land, my household help left for her hometown. Her son needed medical and surgical attention and she wanted to be there.

Curious little boy in the seat in front of us

When we came back, it was to a fully packed workload both at office and at home. Potentials for explosive emotional displays were high.

But amazingly, there were none. Our children who had been left behind were well behaved and helped as best as they could in our absence. We are thrilled by, and thankful for that.

I also feel that an understanding of personalities and human behaviour made a difference - we knew how to tap into each other's strengths and weaknesses.

While on holiday recently, I conducted a DiSC profiling for someone I knew.

Profile details aside, I was somewhat disturbed when I was unable to complete the session with this person. Time ran out and despite saying that we would meet up again over this, the time just didn't materialise.

For me, it is not enough to know what your profile is. You need to know how to use it, and to build understanding of what makes you tick, what irritates you, what motivates you and how to relate with others better.

Had I known the lack of time, I would not have done the profiling.

Memo to self - check time available before starting any profiling.

Tiring Friends

If you were a high "D", sometimes the high "I" would irritate you.

The high "S" of course would want to have peace all round and be nice to everyone.

Why am I letting you know this? Because I just saw it happen!

The high "D" rolled his eyes and walked off at first opportunity.

Leaving the high "S" to listen intently to the high "I" who never noticed anything happening because she was so engrossed with listening to herself talk!

Stressed

Stressed. Unexpected pressure piles on and she is stressed.

Pressure is not from other sources. Pressure is self-inflicted.

It was just a phone call. Granted, an unexpected one. But nonetheless, just a phone call.

Threw her out.

Put pressure on herself.

So she jabbered on the phone. Talked non-stop for 5 minutes. Went on and on and on and on.

The other person on the line could barely get in 20 words. Lots of Hmmms and ahhhs. Listening silence. Like a machine gun the words tumbled over one another, sentences merged into each other, and the paragraphs were almost non-existent. Topic flowed after another topic with the slightest "provocation".

Then a quick interruption. And finally the phone call ends.

The typical high "I" under pressure and stress talks a lot. Yes. Especially on the phone!

A Good Match

It was a special day for him. But he didn't normally celebrate events for himself. He didn't mind not being in the limelight.

She wanted to make it a special and memorable time. So she worked hard to pull it off. A good organizer, with "D" traits, she stressed and strained to get together a hundred people to make the occasion special.

Then she sent him off on an errand.

And he went. With his children who were in on the secret.

When he got back, he had a true surprise. Visibly stunned and touched, both were a little tearful at the occasion.

Amazingly, she was absolutely correct - the dogs went berserk!

She sat there fiddling with her food. Even though she had specifically asked for this dish for breakfast, she was obviously more intent on talking than eating. She pushed the food around in the bowl. Even her drink was untouched.

On and on she spoke. Pouring out her thoughts as they came to mind. She spoke mostly in monotone as she tried to control her emotions. In her quiet, gentle way, she exuded dignity.

But it was only a partial relief to be able to share her frustrations and her sorrow. Later she will have other opportunities to grieve. She will somehow move on from her loss. But it will not be easy. A classic "S" for whom relationships are treasured, this is one loss she will find hard to deal with for some time.

May she find people to come alongside her at this time.

Since talking about my sons leaving home, I have had interesting responses.

Someone I know said very matter-of-factly that it was no big deal - definitely the C-D profile I knew the person to be!

Another person described how he didnt cry when sending off the son, but he was close to tears when he saw his offspring when he stepped off the plane to visit. A touch of S here.

Another talked about how no tears were shed, but had followed all the way to make sure all was well. I know this person to be an S-C. Makes sense!

I guess we all respond differently. Mine? I might cry for a little while more.

But it will be all right soon....

An "I" could be highly strung Chihuahua! They find it hard to sit still! I know of one who wants to get involved in any and every thing!

Dwelling on the Good or the Bad

Results come out and you score lots of A's, with one B. Do you stew and fret about the B? Or do you rejoice over the A?

You do a project and receive lots of good reports about it, with one criticism. Do you dwell on the good or do you dissect the bad?

Your presentation was well received overall. Just one person comes up and says something about how it could have been better. What dwells on your mind more - the good comments or the one area of improvement?

If you can shrug off that one negative and move on, chances are, you have "D" traits in you.
If you dwell on that one negative more than any other, chances are you are more "C".
If you dwell on that one negative but then move on quickly, you're probably an "I".
What about the "S"? For the "S", it would depend on who made that statement. If it was someone close, it would stay with "S" for a while. If not, it will not matter much.....

I read this in the news today.

Kuala Lumpur: Four states which have not gazetted the prohibition on the use of the words, "Allah", "Solat", "Kaabah" and "Baitullah", in any non-Muslim publication in the country, will do so soon.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the gazetting would be made in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Conference of Malay Rulers as the four states, Penang, Federal Territory, Sabah and Sarawak did not have a Sultan or Royal Ruler.

"They come under the jurisdiction of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (in respect of Islamic religious matters) as they do not have a ruler," he told reporters after a Maulidur Rasul 1430 Hijrah/2009 celebration, here, Monday.

Prior to this, Datuk Dr Abdullah Md Zin, the religious adviser to the Prime Minister, was quoted as saying that the respective state Islamic religious councils could take action against those who used the words, "Allah", "Solat", "Kaabah" and "Baitullah" in non-Muslim publications.

The decision on this was made by the National Fatwa Council as its consultative meeting and had been gazetted in 10 states except Penang, Federal Territory, Sabah and Sarawak.

The use of the words became an issue among Muslims after the local Catholic weekly, The Herald, used the word "Allah" is its Bahasa Malaysia edition.

Ahmad Zahid, when winding up the debate on the royal address in Parliament last Thursday, said although the government, 10 state Islamic religious councils and the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association had applied for their case for the ban to be referred to the Federal Court as it involved the Federal Constitution, 10 states had already gazetted the decision made by the National Fatwa Council on the ban.

He said the decision of the 10 states was made under the Control and Restriction of the Propagation of Non-Islamic Religions Enactment.-Bernama

For some, this is no small matter. For others, this is trivial issue - what's all the fuss?

Out of all those who are against this, some would quietly resist. There would be yet others who would make a loud noise about it. Others still would think about how to overcome this before doing anything hasty. Yet others would quickly jump on to any initiatives to make a stand. Whatever your personality, if you were against this, you would respond in your own way.

Are you an "S" who would prefer not to be involved with decision making but are willing to help and assist?

Are you a "C" who would stand back, evaluate first before jumping in to help in whatever way you could?

Training can take over of course. But putting that aside, which one are you?

Playing Tai Chi

Now, before you get worked up, let me first say that I don't mean that I do taichi or anything like that!

So what do I mean?

Well, the movements of taichi are smooth, and often the arm movements require you to sweep away from your body.

Hence we use the phrase "playing taichi" we refer to someone who deflects issues, work, or apportions blame elsewhere.... you get the picture.

High "I"s are wont to do that because they like to be liked. High "S" would be most upset if that happened. The high "D" would not care and not practise it. The high "C" would analyze before making a decision.

"NO" to children who desire something that is not good for them.

"NO" to unrealistic demands on our time and our resourcres.

"NO" to temptations that we need to flee from (read chocolate for some).

And so the list goes on.

But how does one go about saying this two-lettered word?

The high "D" would just shout it or say ever so firmly.

The high "I" would struggle at the thought of possibly no longer being wanted or needed.

The high "S" would fear offending....

The high "C" would consider, mull, ponder, weigh up and then just say it in a way that says "No questions asked".

So then, how do YOU say "NO?"

In a Queue

Imagine a long queue.

Do you go to the post office? Or the check out counter at the local supermarket. Or perhaps you are a traveler and it's the ticket counter you want to reach.

Whatever it is, there are bodies in front of you. Impatient bodies, resigned bodies, hopping-from-one-foot-to-another bodies, and even bodies who seem to have other more interesting things to while waiting.

What is your response?

If you were in a rush, I expect you would be anxious. Perhaps a trite frustrated too. Maybe you might make comments, and perhaps give a call to your next appointment - if you could.

But if you weren't in a rush, what might your response be? Would you nonetheless feel that your precious time is being wasted by the sales girl / ticketing agent / customer in the front?

I wonder how you would feel.

Of course, if you were the sales girl / ticketing agent / customer in front, there would be other emotions that would be going through you!

Fight or Flight

It's been that sort of day.

What if someone was breathing down your neck, waiting for a report from you.

What if someone was sitting there, tapping his fingers on the desk, waiting for your answer.

What if someone was standing, arms crossed, foot tapping away, while watching you finish.

What if someone was sighing within your hearing range and you knew it was because he was waiting for something from you.

How would you react?

Would you be stressed?

Would you giggle with nerves? Would you stumble and make more mistakes? Or would you simply carry on regardless? Would you feel close to tears? Would you feel deep fear?

Note that I said react, and not respond. Our responses can be trained and changed. Our reactions are what you might call gut feeling emotions. Whether your reaction is a fight or a flight one shows your basic personality....

Registration

Would you put a "D" there to make sure that things get done and any awkward people would be dealt with?

How about getting an "I" to greet them all with their enthusiasm, but also making sure that any takings add up at the end of the event!

Perhaps you might want a "C" to sit there instead, although they might be somewhat slow because they are checking through everything.

Would you consider having an "S" there - someone who would smile, get on with the work, although he/she might be intimidated by some of the people.
